Faith, Hope and Carnage
For the editorial project Faith, Hope and Carnage by Nick Cave, a book design was developed based on selected Red Hand Files, the written responses in which Cave addresses readers’ questions, doubts, and personal reflections. The publication concept translates the intimacy and emotional depth of this correspondence into a carefully constructed editorial object, where structure, typography, and material choices support a quiet and immersive reading experience.
The project involved extensive typesetting work and a deliberate typographic selection process. Particular attention was given to hierarchy, line length, spacing, and page rhythm to ensure clarity and continuity throughout the text. Distinct typographic treatments organize questions and responses while maintaining a cohesive visual system across the book. The typographic approach defines the character of the publication and represents one of the most resolved editorial outcomes within the broader body of work.
Production decisions were guided by tactility and craft. The volume was bound using kettle stitch binding, selected for its durability and visible construction, reinforcing the personal and direct nature of the content. A rough, lightly weighted paper stock was chosen to evoke the feel of a working notebook, encouraging closeness and repeated use. The result is an editorial piece defined by typographic precision, material sensitivity, and a strong emphasis on reading experience.
